When used for signalling, the flags represent 26 letters, 10 digits, and three special codes. Each flag also has a special meaning when flown alone, and there are also meanings for many two-flag combinations. The flags are often used to decorate boats, or "dress ship". For this use, the U.S. Navy specifies a particular order of the flags, according to the nautical reference Chapman Piloting. The flags in the design appear in this order.
