Apr. 25: Lijiang

The Naxi village of Baisha has a number of restaurants and guest houses, and some good ethnic shopping. Many of the buildings are new but built in Naxi style. The Lijiang area suffered a severe earthquake in 1996, and some 186,000 homes were destroyed, including most of the Old Town. Naxi wooden buildings generally held up better than concrete ones, so the Old Town was rebuilt in Naxi style, creating the tourist attraction (and UNESCO site) we see today.
