Most Buddhist temple complexes have a hall near the entrance in which the four Heavenly Kings stand guard. Here, the Southern Heavenly King holds a sword; the Eastern Heavenly King holds a stringed instrument called a pipa. On the opposite side, the other two kings hold a dragon and an umbrella. These clay sculptures date from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
